How does GPS vehicle tracking work?

The GPS tracking device equipped with a receiver is attached to the vehicle to be monitored. The device records time and location relative to GPS satellites (using latitude and longitude).
Locating an object requires multiple satellites. The satellites bounce the signal, and the time it takes for the signal to return allows the transmitter to calculate the distance to each satellite. The receiver uses the difference between the transmitted signal and the reception time to calculate the distance.
The receiver then periodically transmits this location data to the GPS tracking software, which takes the recorded data and converts the logged information into a map display.

The first and most important condition for lawful data processing is that the data controller has an appropriate legal basis for processing the data (typically, for example, consent, compliance with a legal obligation, or, in the case of employees, legitimate interest), and that the vehicle driver is informed in accordance with GDPR requirements, including the fact that a geolocation system is operating in the vehicle, for what purpose it is used, and what data it collects.
